Social Media: Corporate profit, marketing, advertising
In the world of advertising and marketing money follows the eyeballs. Meaning companies are going to spend a large majority of their money where the most people will see it. 60 years ago print media was on top. 2/3 of all money spent on advertising went toward newpaper, direct mail and magazines. As we became more technologically advanced and into the 90's tv took over as king and pushed print ads out of the way. Why? Because, that where the eyes had shifted to. Tv becamae the center point in American homes and huge budgets went into grand productions on ads. However, in 2010 it was estimated that tv ads were 33% less effective than in the early 90's. The eyes have once again shifted and media consumption has changed. In 1995 the internet had 5 million users. Today there are over 1.2 billion people on the web. Facebook is not even a decade old and has around 600 million members, Twitter close to 200 million followers and youtube is now the second largest search engine on the planet. Its no suprise the internet is where the people are spending a majority of their time so of course large amounts of money will be spent on marketing and ads.
